You should buy it when purchasing Zoom H1, 7 July 2011

This set should have been included with the recorder. But because it is not, you should consider buying it.

- Adjustable Tripod Stand
This will be handy. H1 is made of cheap plastic (however apart from that it’s a really cool gadget) so you want to make sure it’s stable.

- 240v UK AC Adapter and USB Cable
Haven’t used the adapter yet. But they can be handy if you have any device powered by the USB – the adapter simply has the USB socket.

- Mic Clip Adapter
Haven’t used that but it looks like it will help you to use your H1 as a microphone – or at least the shape and the name of this part suggest that.

- Windscreen Ball
That’s what you’ll be using all the time when working outdoor.

- Padded-Shell Case
And that’s a perfect solution for transport. It’s hard and should protect your H1 but unfortunately you can’t put inside anything else, even the windscreen ball is way too big to fit. So you will carry your H1 inside and all the other accessories will have to find some other place.

Why 4 stars? Because in my opinion the price is a little bit too high and the quality of the pieces matches more less the quality of H1 itself. So they do their job, but you want to be careful with them just in case.

I bought this mainly for the windscreen which works as expected: far from perfect, but ok for my needs.
The case is nice and the clip adapter can also come in handy in a semi-professional setup.
The other parts are ok aswell, but if you are a gadget fan , you probably own similar parts already.
Beware of the shipping costs if you live outside the UK!

Secondly, there's a knack for writing idiomatic stuff for all instruments which sometimes deserts even the greatest composers (Brahms is not the greatest writer for strings, for example), and Adler doesn't really get inside the instrumental character in the way Piston's book does, or better still Cecil Forsyth's "Orchestration", written nearly a hundred years ago. Infuriatingly, Adler's book is badly laid out so if you want to leaf quickly through to find, say, the bottom note of the piccolo there are no headers telling you which instrument is on which page. If I had to use just one book it would be Piston's, because it's succinct, clear and much better written than Adler. I don't know Blatter, and I've never seen Berlioz's book, or Rimsky's. As the first orchestration book I know of to have CDs of the musical examples available, Adler is definitely worth acquiring if you’ve a hundred quid or so to spare. I find the text a bit of a let down though. First, it’s an American book, and many American instruments differ from European ones, a trap for the European reader. Secondly, there’s a knack for writing idiomatic stuff for all instruments which sometimes deserts even the greatest composers (Brahms is not the greatest writer for strings, for example), and Adler doesn’t really get inside the instrumental character in the way Piston’s book does, or better still Cecil Forsyth’s “Orchestration”, written nearly a hundred years ago. Infuriatingly, Adler’s book is badly laid out so if you want to leaf quickly through to find, say, the bottom note of the piccolo there are no headers telling you which instrument is on which page. If I had to use just one book it would be Piston’s, because it’s succinct, clear and much better written than Adler. I don’t know Blatter, and I’ve never seen Berlioz’s book, or Rimsky’s. But the Edwardian gem is Forsyth – detailed, funny and unafraid to trash bad orchestration even from the greats.

Though this book isn’t “perfect”, it runs through almost every single instrument one can expect to find in any modern day symphony orchestra.

Examples range from Bach and Handel to Penderecki, and although more weight is given to pre-1950 orchestral techniques, contemporary techniques and methods are mentioned throughout, with reference to every instrument – apart from perhaps the saxophone (probably due to its limited use in orchestral music before 1950), which could benefit from its own mention of multiphonics etc.

It is stable, easy to assemble, adjust and take apart and not too heavy of bulky to carry around. It is also half the price of other stands advertised. However, it is too small for many laptops and should be advertised only as a projector stand.

This is a great stand. The construction is good using about 1″ tubular steel coated in black. The tripod is firm and the top plate is held very secure by a simple turn screw. The top plate holds my projector well, though there is no retaining strap – it would not be difficult for a user to fit one.

The stand was delivered next day – excellent service for an excellent product.

This may be great for projectors, but I think it’s really dishonest to market it as a laptop stand.

Firstly, it’s too small for many laptops, and the lip around the top means it’s not practical to simply let your laptop overhang a little.

Secondly, even if your laptop does fit, the same lip makes it difficult to connect cables to any ports on the sides (or the front) of your laptop. Or to insert or eject CDs.

Finally, the tilt doesn’t lock in position, so leaning too heavily on the keyboard could cause it to swivel – and send your laptop crashing to the floor.

If you have a projector, it may be suitable. But if you have a laptop, consider a Stagg COS10, Roland SS-PC1 or Kamstands KL-2 instead…

It's a bit of a faff at first but the joy of 'restoring' old 30 year old family movies are priceless.<br/><br/>The challenges anyone will have with this are:<br/>* Getting your VCR / source set up correctly, and located next to your PC / laptop<br/>* Manage detailed settings (not complicated to do) on the software once installed and make sure you set the source as PAL for the UK.<br/>* Checking you have sufficient HD space on your computer to store the converted files<br/>* Remember you have to physically play a full tape to transfer it. This means 10 * 3 hour VHS tapes are of course 30 hours of playing time (no way around this!)<br/><br/>Pros:<br/>+ Software itself is easy to install and set up<br/>+ Main Cables you need are provided (but not S-VHS or 3.5 audio jacks)<br/>+ you can set a record timer on the software so once you hit play on the VCR for a 3-4 hour tape the PC recording will stop automatically<br/>+ One running easy, reliable hassle free conversion of source to PC (as MPG files)<br/><br/>Cons:<br/>- You have to learn to use that old VCR or Hi8 camera again; do you have a working remote for it too? :)<br/>- Software won't detect if the source has stopped (e.g. tape finished, stuck etc)<br/>- Once a transfer is complete, the software will go into a 'sleep' whilst it renders (converts) the captured source into the target format on your PC. This can take a long time depending on your PC spec.<br/>- Whilst the software is rendering, you can't do anything else with the software (other programmes unaffected but your PC will run slow as it is kept busy)<br/>- Software won't (and doesn't really claim to) upscale your recorded source to better image quality. Be prepared to explain to people that VHS recordings were fuzzy and grainy compared to the HD 1080i we have today!<br/>- if you have a 3 or 4 hour VHS tape, the conversion automatically splits the converted file to 2GB chunks of around 1hr or so each. This means you have to track the files in the target folder on your PC and rename them to make sense of them (i.e. part 1, part 2 etc.) You need to use the editing software to stitch them back together that is provided as part of the software, but...<br/>- the editing component of the software is very very basic. Ok for the most minimal of tasks but I would recommend that you use consider another product such as Sony Vegas Movie Studio to do a more polished conversion, DVD menu's etc. Don't know why any one would use this to edit HD video!<br/><br/>Overall:<br/>Need patience, but very rewarding. Bought this to transfer old family VHS and S-VHS tapes to DVD. It’s a bit of a faff at first but the joy of ‘restoring’ old 30 year old family movies are priceless.

The challenges anyone will have with this are:
* Getting your VCR / source set up correctly, and located next to your PC / laptop
* Manage detailed settings (not complicated to do) on the software once installed and make sure you set the source as PAL for the UK.
* Checking you have sufficient HD space on your computer to store the converted files
* Remember you have to physically play a full tape to transfer it. This means 10 * 3 hour VHS tapes are of course 30 hours of playing time (no way around this!)

Pros:
+ Software itself is easy to install and set up
+ Main Cables you need are provided (but not S-VHS or 3.5 audio jacks)
+ you can set a record timer on the software so once you hit play on the VCR for a 3-4 hour tape the PC recording will stop automatically
+ One running easy, reliable hassle free conversion of source to PC (as MPG files)

Cons:
- You have to learn to use that old VCR or Hi8 camera again; do you have a working remote for it too? :)
- Software won’t detect if the source has stopped (e.g. tape finished, stuck etc)
- Once a transfer is complete, the software will go into a ‘sleep’ whilst it renders (converts) the captured source into the target format on your PC. This can take a long time depending on your PC spec.
- Whilst the software is rendering, you can’t do anything else with the software (other programmes unaffected but your PC will run slow as it is kept busy)
- Software won’t (and doesn’t really claim to) upscale your recorded source to better image quality. Be prepared to explain to people that VHS recordings were fuzzy and grainy compared to the HD 1080i we have today!
- if you have a 3 or 4 hour VHS tape, the conversion automatically splits the converted file to 2GB chunks of around 1hr or so each. This means you have to track the files in the target folder on your PC and rename them to make sense of them (i.e. part 1, part 2 etc.) You need to use the editing software to stitch them back together that is provided as part of the software, but…
- the editing component of the software is very very basic. Ok for the most minimal of tasks but I would recommend that you use consider another product such as Sony Vegas Movie Studio to do a more polished conversion, DVD menu’s etc. Don’t know why any one would use this to edit HD video!

Overall:
